The Enemy Within — 2 Samuel 11:1-5

All eyes have been turned to the war at Rabbah. After a winter for the army to reset, David sends Israel back out to finish the job with Joab in the lead. But David stayed home. While historians and extant court watchers had their eyes on the military, the real battle of the day that would affect the king and his country forever was back in Jerusalem. Even this king, the LORD’s anointed and a man after God’s own heart, was a sinner.

The battle was enjoined by a view from the roof. Instead of averting his eyes from the privacy of a neighboring woman, David lost the battle when he stared at beautiful Bathsheba. Then in a dazzling display of lust giving birth to sin leading to death (James 1:14-15), David takes the wife of one of his mighty men (and the daughter of a noble family) and commits adultery with (or perhaps even rapes) her. How the mighty has fallen! All of us, even strong believers, battle with sin. Sometimes the real battle is not “out there” but within.
