The book of Joshua begins with with God’s encouragement to Joshua that, despite the death of Moses who led Israel for 40 years in the wilderness, God was with Joshua to advance God’s plan. In other words, God would accomplish His plans no matter who led Israel.
The great encouragement of God is for us, too, to be strong and courageous in whatever He commands us to do. The first eleven verses of Joshua identify four fundamental principles that assure us so:
- God’s purposes are not dependent upon men;
- God’s promises are sure;
- God’s precepts — His Law which gives us wisdom — are sure;
- God’s presence never fails — He is always with us.
