Consequences of a Hardened Heart — 2 Samuel 10
In this strange story, the character of David in the height of his reign is shown clearly, much like with Mephibosheth. To even his enemies, David sought to be not just fair but surprisingly kind. While sending an envoy of compassion in light of a new king’s reign upon the death of his father, David hoped to be encouraging and perhaps cement a lasting friendship. Instead, the envoy and thus David were insulted and shamed.
Perhaps David’s good leadership was wearing off even on Joab. Joab’s leadership unsurprisingly includes excellent strategy but shockingly provides a “For God and Country” speech complete with a confidence in the LORD’s goodness regardless of the outcome of battle. God’s faithfulness is demonstrated through the lives and speech of even scoundrels and enemies! In the end, God’s faithfulness to His people will result, like with Nahash, to every foe being vanquished and every knee being bent to God and to His Christ.
